Message from the Vicar:
On Wednesday night, I participated in an online follow-up session for the Leading Your Church into Growth (LyCiG) Conference that I attended earlier this year. The session’s theme focused on how a parish can become a more inviting and welcoming place for children and young people. Brian Holden, the Team Leader of the Children and Young People’s Ministry team for the Diocese, led the discussion, which was excellent. I will give a more detailed report to the Parish Council.
One idea was so good that I would like to share it with you all. It is wonderfully simple: the parish appoints some people whose responsibility it is to welcome families and young people if they come to church. Their task is not to replicate the role of the Welcomers but to just be a presence and a resource person. For example, if a parent gets up to go out because the child seems to be making too much noise, the resource person could go out with them and engage, perhaps saying, “I’ve noticed you’re doing a great job…” I can vividly remember trying to manage my children in Church when they were very young and just how exhausting it was. I’m sure many of you know what I mean. It is even more of a challenge today when we don’t have Sunday School; I’m sure an hour seems like a very long time. Sometimes, a small change can make a big difference.
Bishop Paul has invited all the parishes in the Jumbunna region to a Prayer Day on Saturday, 27 July. On that day, we will unite in praying for people throughout the world, the local community, the people of the parish, the Diocese, the Church, and anything else on our hearts.
Also, Bishop Paul will present a series of three talks titled Faith Under Trial: The Book of Daniel on the 17, 24, and 31 July. These talks will be presented live at Glen Waverley Anglican Church at 7.30 pm and also live-streamed.
Further information on these two events to come.
Every blessing,
Heather,
Vicar
